Also, plugging iphone into the USB port doesn't commence the carplay system as per the Mazda website guidance. With the Mazda6, I believe Apple CarPlay was introduced in the 2019 and you could retrofit CarPlay on any 2016+ Mazda6. I installed the car play kit in my 2015 Mazda 3.
